What Airplane Mode Actually Turns Off — and What It Doesn’t

Many people switch on airplane mode and expect the phone to become almost inactive. Then the screen still works, downloaded music keeps playing, alarms still ring, and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth may even be available again. That can make the setting seem more complicated than it really is.

Airplane mode is mainly a wireless-connection control, not a shutdown mode. It disables the device’s cellular connection and changes other wireless connections such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth according to the platform. The phone itself remains powered on, so offline apps, stored files, the camera, alarms, and other local functions can continue working.[1,2]

The important distinction is simple: being powered on is not the same as being connected.

What Airplane Mode Is Meant to Do

Airplane mode exists to change how a device communicates wirelessly.

It does not turn off the processor, screen, storage, or operating system. Instead, it disables or changes the wireless connections that would normally allow the device to communicate with cellular networks and other external systems.

The name comes from its use during air travel. In the United States, for example, the Federal Aviation Administration says cell phones and other portable electronic devices must be used in airplane mode or with the cellular connection disabled during flight. Wi-Fi may be used when the aircraft has an installed Wi-Fi system and the airline permits it.[3]

Airlines and aviation rules can differ by country and operator, so instructions from the flight crew still take priority.

What Happens to the Cellular Connection

The most important change is the cellular connection.

On iPhone, Apple says airplane mode turns off cellular and Wi-Fi.[1] With the cellular radio disconnected from the carrier network, the phone cannot use its normal mobile-data connection.

Ordinary carrier-based calling and messaging also depend on that connection. However, if Wi-Fi is later turned back on, internet-based services can still work. Depending on the device, carrier, and service, that can include messaging, calling, browsing, or other online functions that operate through Wi-Fi rather than the cellular network.

This is why an airplane-mode phone can be disconnected from the mobile network without being completely offline.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Do Not Behave Exactly the Same on Every Phone

The original idea that airplane mode simply switches off all wireless radios is no longer accurate across modern devices.

On current Apple devices, turning on airplane mode disables cellular and Wi-Fi, but Bluetooth remains on.[1] Wi-Fi can then be turned back on if it is permitted.

Google documents somewhat different behaviour on Android and Pixel phones. When airplane mode is first enabled, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned off, but either can be switched back on. The phone can also remember those choices the next time airplane mode is used.[2]

So there is no single rule that says Bluetooth must always switch off when airplane mode is enabled.

The important constant is that airplane mode separates the phone from its normal cellular connection. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be handled more flexibly depending on the operating system and previous settings.

Why Wi-Fi Can Work While Airplane Mode Is Still On

This can initially seem contradictory.

If airplane mode is supposed to disconnect the phone, why can Wi-Fi be turned back on without leaving airplane mode?

Because the setting does not have to treat every wireless technology as one permanent group. The cellular connection can remain disabled while Wi-Fi operates separately. Both Apple and Google explicitly allow Wi-Fi use while airplane mode remains active.[1,2]

That is what makes in-flight Wi-Fi possible. The phone can stay disconnected from the cellular network while connecting to an aircraft’s approved Wi-Fi system.

The same principle explains why Bluetooth headphones can still be used during many flights.

What Airplane Mode Does Not Turn Off

The phone itself continues operating.

You can generally still use functions that do not require an active network connection, including:

  • Taking photos or videos
  • Viewing photos already stored on the device
  • Reading downloaded documents
  • Listening to downloaded music or podcasts
  • Watching downloaded video
  • Using the calculator
  • Writing notes
  • Setting or using alarms
  • Using the flashlight
  • Opening apps with offline functions

Whether a particular app works depends on what that app needs.

A calculator can work completely locally. A streaming app may open but cannot retrieve new content unless the required media was downloaded beforehand. A cloud-based service may be largely unusable until some form of internet connection returns.

Airplane mode therefore does not decide which apps work. It changes the connections those apps have available.

What Happens to Background Internet Activity

When the cellular connection is disabled and Wi-Fi is also off, apps lose their normal route to the internet.

That means network-dependent background tasks cannot continue communicating in the usual way until a connection becomes available again. Some activity may simply wait and resume later.

This is different from saying that airplane mode closes every app or stops every background process. Apps and system services can still perform local work that does not require a network.

If Wi-Fi is turned back on while airplane mode remains enabled, permitted internet activity can also resume through that Wi-Fi connection.

What About GPS and Location?

Airplane mode should not be treated as a universal “location off” switch.

Google treats airplane mode and Location as separate controls on Pixel phones: its battery-saving guidance lists turning on airplane mode and turning off Location as two different actions.[4] That means disabling normal wireless communication is not the same setting as disabling location services.

Location-related apps can also work to different degrees without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Apple, for example, allows downloaded offline maps to provide turn-by-turn directions even when an iPhone has no Wi-Fi or cellular connection.[5]

What may be missing is the online part of the experience. Live traffic, new searches, updated business information, or map areas that were never downloaded can still require internet access.

So when a map behaves differently in airplane mode, the problem is not necessarily that “GPS has been switched off.” The app may simply be missing the online information it normally uses alongside location.

Airplane Mode Can Reduce Battery Use in Poor-Signal Areas

Airplane mode can also be useful when cellular coverage is very poor or completely absent.

Apple notes that searching for Wi-Fi or cellular signals and operating in low-signal conditions can affect battery life. Its current battery guidance recommends enabling airplane mode if you know you will be in an area with no coverage for some time.[6]

This does not mean airplane mode is a general battery-saving replacement for Low Power Mode. The two settings solve different problems.

Airplane mode helps by removing network connections you do not need. Low Power Mode changes a broader range of device behaviours to reduce power consumption.

If you still need Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, those connections can often remain available while cellular service stays off.[1,2]

Airplane Mode Is Useful Beyond Flights

The name comes from air travel, but the setting can be useful elsewhere.

You might use it in a location with no cellular coverage, when you want to prevent mobile-data use while travelling, or when you temporarily want the phone disconnected from the cellular network without shutting it down.

It can also be useful for troubleshooting. Temporarily switching airplane mode on and off forces wireless connections to disconnect and reconnect, which can sometimes help when a network connection has become stuck.

The key is understanding what you are controlling. Airplane mode is about connectivity, not about suspending the entire phone.

Airplane Mode Is Not the Same as Do Not Disturb

These two settings can sometimes appear to produce a similar experience because both may result in fewer interruptions, but they work very differently.

Do Not Disturb and similar focus modes generally control how notifications, calls, and alerts reach you. The phone can remain fully connected to cellular and internet services.

Airplane mode changes the connections themselves.

That means messages and other information may continue arriving in the background while Do Not Disturb is active, even if you are not being alerted to them. With airplane mode and no Wi-Fi connection, many online services cannot receive new information until connectivity returns.

One controls interruptions. The other controls communication.

Airplane Mode Is Not a Privacy Mode

Airplane mode also should not be treated as a complete privacy or security setting.

With cellular, Wi-Fi, and other relevant connections unavailable, a device naturally has fewer ways to exchange information with online services. But airplane mode does not encrypt stored files, change app permissions, erase information, or determine how an online service handles data once you reconnect.

And because Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can often be re-enabled while airplane mode remains on, seeing the airplane icon does not necessarily mean the device has no active wireless connections.[1,2]

Why Some Apps Still Work and Others Do Not

An app’s behaviour in airplane mode depends largely on where its information and processing come from.

An offline notes app may work almost normally because its information is stored locally. A downloaded film can continue playing because the media already exists on the phone. A cloud document that has not been saved offline may be inaccessible because the device needs a network connection to retrieve it.

Some apps fall somewhere in between. They may allow you to view previously downloaded information but not retrieve anything new.

This is why airplane mode can make the same phone feel almost unchanged in one app and nearly unusable in another.

The difference is not the airplane-mode setting itself. It is how dependent each feature is on an outside connection.

What Happens When You Turn Airplane Mode Off Again

Once airplane mode is disabled, the phone can reconnect to the cellular network and other wireless services according to its settings.

Connections may take a short time to return. The phone needs to find the relevant network again, and apps that were waiting for connectivity may then begin synchronizing, refreshing, or retrieving new information.

That is why notifications, messages, email, or other updates can sometimes appear shortly after airplane mode is switched off.

If Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings were changed while airplane mode was active, the exact behaviour on the next use can depend on the operating system. Both Apple and Google document that some wireless choices can be remembered between uses of airplane mode.[1,2]

The Clearest Way to Understand Airplane Mode

The easiest mental model is not “airplane mode turns the phone off.”

Think of it as separating the phone from its normal communication networks while leaving the computer inside the phone running.

The screen still works because it does not require a cellular network. Stored music still plays because the file is already there. The camera still takes pictures because photography can happen locally. An online streaming service cannot retrieve something new without a connection because that task depends on an outside server.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth add another layer because modern devices can allow them to operate separately from the cellular connection.

Once those pieces are separated, airplane mode stops looking inconsistent.

Conclusion

What airplane mode actually turns off is primarily the phone’s normal cellular connection, along with other wireless connections according to the device and its settings.

On current Apple devices, cellular and Wi-Fi are disabled when airplane mode is activated while Bluetooth can remain on.[1] On Android and Pixel phones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are initially turned off but can be re-enabled, and the phone may remember those choices later.[2]

The rest of the device continues operating. Offline apps, stored files, the camera, alarms, and other local functions do not require the phone to be connected to a cellular network.

Location-related features can also be more nuanced than they appear, and downloaded maps can support navigation without Wi-Fi or cellular service.[4,5]

Airplane mode therefore does one main job: it changes how the device communicates. It does not shut down the device, stop every app, disable every local function, or create a complete privacy mode.
